While spring gardening may steal the spotlight, fall yard work is equally crucial. Putting in some effort now can make your spring and summer seasons more manageable.

Here are some essential tips:

1. Combat Invasive Plants Now!

When willows and aspens start to turn, it's prime time for perennial work. As plants weaken, take advantage of good old-fashioned elbow grease:

  • Remove biennial invasives mechanically by pulling them out, root and all.
  • After the first freeze, capitalize on a two-week window for optimal herbicide treatment. Plants are sending energy to their roots, allowing herbicides to target the problem effectively.
  • Don't forget to spray rosettes of plants like musk thistle, even if they didn't flower this year.

Note: Last call for purchasing herbicides through TCWP is September 27th.

2. Dispose Responsibly

  • Properly dispose of invasive plants in the trash to prevent seed spread.
  • Schedule hazardous waste disposal appointments for chemicals.
  • Always handle and dispose of chemicals responsibly.

3. Winterize Your Equipment

Protect your investment by winterizing your herbicide sprayer:

  1. Rinse the entire system thoroughly with clean water.
  2. Run a cleaning agent through the system (consult product labels).
  3. Rinse two more times with clean water.
  4. Clean the outside of the sprayer.
  5. Drain the system, using compressed air if needed.
  6. Add antifreeze to prevent damage (check if dilution is required).
  7. Remove and store detachable parts in a frost-free area.

Remember to wear appropriate PPE when handling chemicals.
